Captiva Island Shopping

Captiva Village's main street is lined with quaint pastel-hued cottages that house upscale shops, and fine restaurants. But thanks to a long-standing ban on buildings taller than a palm tree, the island's lush scenery takes center stage. A handful of galleries and studios will satisfy art collectors, and several clothiers provide beach wear and frocks. Groceries, prescriptions, souvenirs, and a bevy of yummy baked goods are available at Bailey's General Store on Sanibel. For full-on outlet shopping and mall sprees, visitors venture to the mainland.

Self-billed as "The Ultimate Wildlife Gallery", the building itself is one wild work of art. A ramshackle cottage covered in carvings of dolphins, egrets, and turtles, it appears to grow out of the surrounding banyan trees. The gallery is a popular with children as it is wildlife art aficionados; offering big, bright animal sculptures, cute critter-themed knick knacks, and the popular Caribbean Soul t-shirt line.

Long before the advent of the Cracker Barrel chain, Bailey's defined the quintessential southern general store. Founded in 1899, the store offers everything from produce, deli meats, and fresh-baked bread, to homemade fudge and a walk-in humidor. Part grocery, part pharmacy, part town hall, Bailey's is a must-see for any island visitor. Locals dare you to try and resist the bakery's famous Dreamsicle Pie. For stress-free island living, Bailey's will even deliver your groceries right to your yacht or doorstep.
